For nearly twenty years I served in Israel’s 69 Squadron – “The Hammers” – the
squadron that once flew the only three B-17 Flying Fortresses ever to serve in the Israeli Air Force. I had met several of the pilots and ground crew who flew and maintained those airplanes, read books about them, watched documentaries, and convinced myself that I knew their story.
