Service Beyond the Silver Screen: Brigadier General Stewart and JIMMY

The untold true story of America’s most-beloved actor and the iconic role that saved him, focuses on the most transformative season in Jimmy Stewart’s life – from winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in The Philadelphia Story to enlisting and becoming a combat pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. He flew twenty missions over Europe, rising to the rank of Colonel by the end of the war, only to return home broken and disheartened. Then George Bailey and It’s a Wonderful Life came calling.

Stewart could have easily stayed in Hollywood when war broke out in 1941. Instead, he fought the studio system and the U.S. Army to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Service to his country was in Stewart’s DNA. Hailing from Indiana, Pennsylvania, his father, Alexander, had served in World War I, and his grandfather in the Civil War. After enlisting as a private, Stewart quickly completed the Army’s pilot training due to his extensive experience as a private pilot. In 1943, he was sent to Europe, commissioned as a Captain.

As a B-24 Liberator commander in the 445th Bombardment Group, 2nd Combat  Bombardment Wing, 2nd Bombardment (later Air) Division, 8th United States Army Air Force, Stewart flew 20 missions over Europe between 1943 and 1944. Based in Tibenham, United Kingdom, the 445th suffered some of the heaviest losses of the war.

In early 1944, Stewart was transferred to the 453rd Bomb Group as an operations officer, where on D-Day, he participated in the invasion planning. Colonel Stewart returned home in August of 1945, having been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (twice), the Air Medal (four times), and the French Croix de Guerre.

But by 1945, Hollywood had moved on. Stewart, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), was offered the lead role in a small film directed by his friend, Frank Capra, called It’s a Wonderful Life. While a box office bust, the movie gave Stewart back his life – his prayer to God at the end of the movie is both George Bailey and Stewart himself reaching out for help. Shortly after It’s a Wonderful Life, Stewart met Gloria Hatrick, the love of his life, and was acting again,
starring in, among other classics, Rear Window, Vertigo, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

What many don’t know, however, is that Stewart continued his service to our nation. After World War II, Stewart became a reservist in the newly formed U.S. Air Force and served another 20 years – including an observation mission during the Vietnam War – eventually retiring as a Brigadier General on May 31, 1968.

The Museum’s Role in JIMMY

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force served as a historical resource for JIMMY, providing the production team with access to the museum’s extensive archives and expertise on the Eighth Air Force.

Through photographs, firsthand accounts, historical records, and consultation with museum staff, the production explored the people, places, and experiences that shaped Jimmy Stewart’s wartime service.

JIMMY, starring KJ Apa as Stewart, is dedicated to the men and women of the Mighty Eighth, and all those who have served our nation, past and present. Stewart’s daughter, Kelly, is an executive producer alongside director Aaron Burns and screenwriter Justin Strawhand.

The ensemble cast also includes Kara Killmer, Max Casella, Neal McDonough, Julian Works, Sarah Drew, Jason Alexander, Rob Riggle, Chris McDonald, Jemma Donovan, Jen Lilley, with a special guest appearance by Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu in It’s a Wonderful Life.
