H+STEM Day: Motor Pool

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force invites families and young learners to explore the fascinating intersection of history and engineering at its upcoming H+STEM Day educational program, Motor Pool, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
H+STEM is a museum-led initiative designed to connect historical topics with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts. Each H+STEM Day presents a new theme. This August, participants will dive into the world of simple and complex machines, exploring how gears, levers, engines, and aircraft systems helped move both people and progress during World War II.
The program will feature a range of educational stations that introduce the fundamentals of mechanical movement, including the four forces of flight and hands-on demonstrations of simple machines. A highlight of the day includes the opportunity to experience a rare, ground-level look inside the historic B-17 Flying Fortress, guided by museum docents. This unique viewing experience offers insight into the aircraft’s engineering and preservation, without requiring guests to enter the plane.
Outside, the museum will present a motor pool exhibit, echoing the wartime term used to describe a collection of trucks and ground support vehicles essential to the operations of the Eighth Air Force. Families will enjoy a Touch-a-Truck educational experience, connecting modern learning with historical logistics.
The event is designed for students ages 5 to 10, with special Learning Power STEM sessions led by Southern Company Educator Wayne Grimes, who will host three interactive classes inspired by Georgia’s 4th-grade science curriculum.
Admission for H+STEM Day is $6 per participant, while museum members receive free entry. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
