“The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Second Lieutenant Milton L. Hymes, Jr., has been reported missing in action since twentieth of June over Germany if further details or other information are received you will be promptly notified.” Signed Ulio, Adjutant General Washington DC. 4:32 pm July 2, 1944.
When Georgia Hymes received the handwritten dispatch notifying her of her son’s disappearance, it left a permanent hole in her heart. One that was never closed during her, or her children’s lifetimes. On Friday, remaining family members were able to lay 2nd Lt. Hymes to rest next to his mother and father in Bonaventure Cemetery.
