The Poppy Project: Remembrance is the Mission

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force invites teachers and students to take part in The Poppy Project, a creative and meaningful way to honor our Veterans.

Inspired by the 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, the poppy has become a powerful symbol of remembrance. This engaging lesson plan, designed for grades 5–8, blends history, English language arts, and visual arts for an interdisciplinary learning experience your students will never forget.

Through the use of primary sources, creative expression, and critical thinking, students will explore the enduring message of remembrance and gratitude that the poppy represents. It’s a perfect project to incorporate into your Veterans Day or Memorial Day curriculum.

Download your copy of The Poppy Project and help your students connect with history in a meaningful way.

Every Thursday, Target for Today broadcasts on Facebook and the museum’s YouTube channel. Each episode highlights important dates, notable figures, collection artifacts, and compelling stories from the Eighth Air Force experience and the broader history of World War II.
