Hard to believe, but it has now been more than 80 years since World War II began, and living witnesses are fewer and fewer every year. How do we keep two World Wars relevant to kids and teens in a fast-changing world? How do we engage kids who are not interested in military history, as well as those who are?
These were the questions that first intrigued British-born academic historian Dr. Annette Laing more than 15 years ago, when she was a history professor at Georgia Southern University.
Now, she’s the author of The Snipesville Chronicles, “clever and charming” (Kirkus) novels about three Georgia kids and teens who find themselves unwilling time-travelers to World War II England. Dr. Laing also presents what she calls “non-boring history” programs at schools, public libraries, and museums around the United States, earning rave reviews as she engages kids (and adults!) in subjects that include the Home Front in both world wars.
Enjoy Dr. Laing’s fascinating discussion (and demonstration!) for adults of what she does, why she does it, and what a history professor brings to edutainment.
Annette Laing, PhD, is a former academic historian of early America and the British Atlantic World, most noted for her work on popular religious culture. She resigned her tenured post at Georgia Southern University in 2008 to devote herself to her increasingly popular work with young people. Annette is author of the four Snipesville Chronicles novels, and is currently at work on a new book set in the California Gold Rush.
